Summer holidays are here and it's a good time to read so I'm writing about books that I have enjoyed and keep coming back to. Reading is a big part of my practice as an illustrator.
What a dreamy list, so much inspiration, thanks Charlotte! I am also obsessed with martin’s books and read them again and again, my fave is the Visual Storytelling one as I’m a fan of all the interviews with different types of people who make books.
I’m also loving the artists way at the moment, even without strictly doing all the activities.
For an illustrated books, are you familiar with the “This is” series by Sasek? I’m sure you are but if not then I really think they’re right up your street!
Just found you on Instagram and here! I’m loving your posts. I have the new Martin Salisbury book and am really enjoying it - one I will read cover to cover. I’ve added his other drawing one to my list!
From a fellow bookworm—thank you for this list! I placed holds on “Four Thousand Weeks” and “A Swim in a Pond in the Rain” and am pleased to discover I’m the first in line for both. Yay!
What are a few other books you enjoy on creativity/writing? 👀
Oh, thank you for sharing This comes just at the right time.A stressful term is over ,travelling and relaxing is on my agenda and at the moment there' s only a few books in my suitcase ( travel light, they say, but I wouldn' t mind a few more ,now I finally will have some time) I' ve started the artists way and my journal of morning pages again ...I come back to this ( activity-) book by
Julia Cameron.
another book I' m very excited to read this summer was a birthday present ,from a good friend who knows me well and always nails it:
The book is called
" und dann...Wie Kinderbücher Gestalt annehmen" by M.Wrede and A.von Sperber. It' s about the process of making picture books and covers illustration, Storyboard, characters etc.
I love a good summer reading list - thank you! I already own Four Thousand Weeks so will bump it up the list :) Did you know George Saunders has a substack?
Thank you for the list, definitely going to check out the 4000 thousands week. I had the Quentin book in my hand but regretfully didn't buy it… Well, now I have to.
Thank you so much for sharing! I read Four Thousand Weeks a year or two ago and found it very profound. I’m excited to check out the other books on this list! I love seeing what others are reading. I don’t read many books on creativity or artists and am now wondering why I don’t!
Ooh.. such a nice list of books! I love the one by Martin Salisbury. The Quentin Blake one is on my wish list. I recently bought Alfabeto, a book about the work of Beatrice Alemagna. It is spectacular, I love her work so much. I like how you read such a diverse list of books! Really inspiring.
Such a lovely selection! I d try to find some of these in our local library! I love your water/swim series as my kids also spent a lot of time in pool too🙌

Great post and a wonderful list. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the Martin Salisbury one.
What an inspiring list! Definitely going to look for that George Saunders one, and I'm curious about Understanding Comics. Love the ink drawing too 😍
